Puyguilhem Château, built in the 16th century for Mondot de la Marthonie, displays it elegant, Renaissance style silhouette against the Villars woods, near Brantôme in the middle of Périgord Vert. You get the best view of its impressive shape from the perfectly trimmed boxwood massif in front of the Historic Monument listed building: The main building, with bay windows, is flanked by towers and turrets of various shapes.
Inside, a wide staircase leads you to different furnished rooms, decorated with tapestries. Admire the exceptional fireplace showing the twelve works of Hercules, then return the gallery on the top floor of the château where you can see an oak frame in the shape of an overturned boat hull. Villars has other surprises for tourists, including one of the most beautiful painted caves in Périgord, and Boschaud abbey.
